Week #1 An evening with shadows

Sunday evening I sat in my living room and looked out my back door to a striking display of light and shadow. It was closing in on 5 o'clock and the sun was making its way to the horizon. There was a very thin layer of cloud covering the sun creating a diluted effected that washed out the sky. The angle of the sun cast long, dark shadows across the grass, onto my porch. The shadows of the 2 trees splitting the frame divided the screen into three, almost like the image was composed for a gallery or comic book. The difference between the lit and shaded parts of the scene created beautiful contrast.  This contrast was accentuated by the darkness of the shadows and the blown out grey of the sky. The way the leaves caught the sun and cast shadow on each other made the trees pop and stand out. The overall effect of this scene was very bold, and made it seem as though some important action might occur at any moment.

  1. Great photo and I love the qualities that you pulled from it. Contrast is so important is what we do onstage, not just light, but shadow, to create emotion
